Hello, My name is Christine Martins-Ezeifeaku and I’ve been given the honour of receiving the Journey Award. I am starting my first year at the University of Waterloo, pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Science. My aspirations for the future include working in cybersecurity to contribute to global safety and enhance digital privacy. Receiving this award allows me the opportunity to focus on my future without a financial barrier. It reminds me to stay committed to the success I’ve seen in receiving this award and excel in my academic pursuits while making a difference in the community around me.
Gina Malaba
My name is Gina Malaba and I am a first generation Congolese Canadian from Edmonton, AB. I graduated from the University of Alberta with a BA in English Honours, and a double-minor in Philosophy and Political Science. It is such an honour to have been selected for the Journey Award Scholarship! As I continue my journey into higher education, this award will be considered as both a milestone and reminder to strive for excellence in everything I do. I foresee upholding this sentiment not only as an upcoming MA Candidate at Carleton University, but throughout the remainder of my life.
Gabrielle Spencer
I’m Gabrielle I’m a Jamaican immigrant with the passion to make a change in the communities that I’m from. Once I receive my Undergraduate degree in Nursing, I plan to attend Medical School to become a psychiatrist! My ultimate dream is to open mental health facilities in and around my town and my home parishes in Jamaica. After a difficult year filled with tragedies, this scholarship genuinely was a much-needed pick me up. I’m excited to see what the world has in store for me next!

Receiving the Dr. ABC scholarship is an incredible honor that recognizes my dedication towards the next phase in “my journey”, post secondary aspirations for academic excellence, leadership, and innovation. My name is Nathalia and I am a recent Engineering Chemistry graduate from Queen’s University. Throughout my degree, I always knew I needed to share my love for learning with others and as of now, I am an incoming student at OISE in the MA Child Studies and Education program for Fall 2024. It is truly by the grace of God and my incredible educators, that I have made it to this point. This scholarship is a beautiful support to this journey, where I know I will be able to serve others and I am truly grateful for this blessing.

There will be two for Black students entering college/university in Canada and two of students entering college/university in Jamaica. Together, we can make dreams come true. DR.ABC Educational Scholarships Awards
Dr. ABC is passionate about education and the transformative opportunities it holds for individuals and communities.
All applicants to the DR. ABC Educational Foundation Scholarship Program are assessed based on demonstrated academic ability, involvement in school and/or community leadership activities and volunteerism, financial need, personal achievements beyond academics which may include personal accomplishments in spite of hardships, and a commitment to their career goals and in giving back. All Applicants must self identify as Black, from Caribbean or African heritage.
The Adina Awards (2)
$100,000 JMD
The Adina Award, named after Doris Adina Campbell, Dr. Campbell’s beloved mother, will be awarded to two (2) students, who is currently attending, or will be attending College/University in Jamaica.
The Journey Awards (2)
$1000 CDN
The Journey Award will be presented to two (2) students living in Canada attending University.
The Toolbox Award (2)
$100,000 JMD
The ToolBox Award will be given to two (2) individuals from Jamaica who demonstrates a passion for skills-trade, and has fully completed a program/studies from a recognized Apprentiseship or Trade School.
The 'Invisible' Student Award (1)
$1000 CDN or
$100,000 JMD
This Invisible Student Award will be given to a student from Jamaica or Canada, who identifies as 2SLGBTQIA+.
Applications are open from May 1 – 31, 2024

MEET the COMMITTEE
MICHAEL HAYWOOD
Michael Haywood migrated to Canada from Jamaica over 14years ago, and have worked with a Non-Profit Organization in the Parkdale area as an Administrative assistant, thereafter attaining a Business Diploma from George Brown College and is currently with Banking Operations at a financial institution.
ANTHONIA IKEMEH
Anthonia Ikemeh is an educator, advocate, mentor, education consultant and artist. She was born in Nigeria and migrated to Canada at age 11. Currently, she works as an Occasional Teacher for the TCDSB. She continues to dedicate time to volunteer as a mentor for the Black Future Educators’ Pathways (BFEP) initiative at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE). Anthonia offers her services in communities as a guest speaker and shares her thoughts, experiences, and story on anti-racist education. She has won numerous awards and scholarships as an educator and leader in her professional journey. Anthonia is passionate about the early years, play-based learning, and African-Indigenous way of being, knowing and learning. She reflects and expresses her thoughts and experiences through poetry, drawing and painting to heal from past, present, and ongoing trauma. Anthonia believes that educators have a critical responsibility to actively engage in social justice issues. Equipped with a diploma in Professional Theatre and Early Childhood Education, Honours Bachelor’s degree in Child Development and a Masters in Teaching degree, she has dedicated her professional training towards understanding young children and best-practices in teaching and learning processes. Anthonia considers herself to be a developing anti-racist learner and is in a constant state of unlearning and relearning to enact transformative change.
CANUTE LAWRENCE
Canute attended St. Patrick’s Primary School, Jamaica, 1974-1979; Wolmer’s High School for Boys, Jamaica, 1979-1984; The Mico University College, Jamaica, 1984-1987; The University of the West Indies, Jamaica, 1988-1992; La Universidad de Oriente, Venezuela, 1997; La Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, 1999; Yorkville University, Canada, 2020-2022.
Canute Lawrence is a Jamaican-Canadian educator who taught in Jamaica for 16 years, 4 years in the United States, and 17 years in Canada. In Jamaica, Canute’s voice was heard in several radio plays and commercials. He was an actor with the LTM Pantomime Company of Jamaica for 7 seasons. Canute co-hosted an entertainment segment on RJR 94FM in the 1990s called ‘Sound Bytes’ which provided brief entertainment updates and reviews on concerts, movies and plays on the local and international scenes.
While teaching in New York City, Canute also appeared in Off-off Broadway productions. Currently, Canute resides in Toronto where he continues to add richness to the Diasporan entertainment scene with his stage plays. In 2021, Canute published his BESTSELLER book, Pathology of a Pandemic, which Amazon rated #1 New Release in Canadian Literature just two weeks after its June publication. Canute is a contributing writer to The Caribbean Camera newspaper in Canada. He is a recipient of The Mico University College 185th Alumni Commemoration Award. When Canute is not working, he spends his time traveling, sight-seeing, reading, and entertaining friends and family.
CECIL THOMS
Cecil Thoms has more than two decades of experience in journalism, marketing, communications, and public service. His career is marked by a deep understanding of media dynamics, storytelling, and strategic public relations.
He has held pivotal leadership roles in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Jamaica Urban Transit Company where he has served as the head of communications for both organizations. Currently, Cecil is serving as head of Communications and International Relations at the Office of the Information Commissioner, where he champions transparency, data security, and regulatory compliance.
A distinguished alumnus of the University of the West Indies, Cecil earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication, followed by a Master’s degree in International Studies from the University of Sheffield in England. These academic achievements have enriched his global perspective and diplomatic
acumen.
Raised in St. Catherine and educated at Tacius Golding High School, Cecil’s passion for debating, dancing, and drama flourished. His talents were recognized by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission, where he earned medals in all categories.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Cecil is a devoted advocate of the fine arts, actively supporting local artistic initiatives. He maintains an active lifestyle as a 5K and 10K runner, embodying discipline and perseverance in both his career and personal endeavours.
JULET ALLEN
Julet Allen has over 30 years of experience in the social service sector as a social worker in Toronto, Canada where she has successfully worked with various organizations in a leadership role to achieve impactful outcomes for those on the margins. Currently she is a professor at Humber College in the Faculty of Community and Social Services where she teaches in the Community Justice Diploma Program.
She brings expertise within the fields of Youth Engagement with special focus on Black youth in the child welfare and justice systems, anti-Black racism, mental health and trauma. She is well versed in working from practices rooted in decolonization, anti-Black racism, and anti-oppression frameworks.
